The National Honor Society (NHS) was established in 1921, and the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) was established in 1929.
NHS is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school and middle level students. More than just an honor roll, NHS and NJHS serve to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character (and Citizenship for NJHS).
Today, it is estimated that more than one million students participate in activities of the NHS and NJHS. NHS and NJHS chapters are found in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, many U.S. Territories, and Canada. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.
To be eligible for membership at SFIS, students must be either a junior or senior with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and be violation free. Students must be recommended by their teachers and also pass an interview conducted by sponsors and members. Responsibilities include maintaining the GPA requirement, remaining violation free, attending meetings, and participating in one hour of community service per month.
The faculty advisor for NHS at SFIS is Patrice Chavez and the faculty advisor for NJHS is Paula Salazar.
